WHAT MAKES PARK CIRCLE A GREAT LIVE/WORK/PLAY NEIGHBORHOOD?
Park Circle, located in North Charleston, is a centrally located park with an unusual layout that includes a popular free frisbee disc golf course.
Originally composed of rice plantations which eventually became subdivided, the planned community of Park Circle was just one of just two “garden city” models in the country. In 1912, a group of Charleston businessmen formed a development company, bought the Burton tract, and began to plan a new community that would include community parks and green space as a central theme.
The 1913 design by William Bell Marquis followed the English Garden City style. The area includes Arts and Crafts type bungalows, with about 17 small parks. Marquis Street is a tribute to the designer and streets such as Durant, Buist, Mixon, Hyde, and O’Hear to some of the other developers. Park Circle was planned with areas reserved for industrial, commercial, and residential usage. It was one of only two English Garden Style city communities in the US and most of the original planning concept remains today. Within the circle itself are 2 baseball fields, a kids playground and the Felix C. Davis Community Center. The Park Circle Disc Golf Course goes all the way around the outside of the same circle, using all 8 green area islands (7 with 1 hole, 1 with 2 holes). It was designed by Charleston Disc Golf Club in 2003, with all holes Par 3.
Park Circle has a number of amenities that make it one of the best places to live in the Charleston area. Among them are:
1) Park Circle Recreation:
There are an abundance of recreational facilities available for use in Park Circle. The Danny Jones Recreational center has a basketball court, ping pong, tennis, roller hockey, and an olympic sized swimming pool all available for use.
If you are into Disc Golf, there is a full 18 hole disc golf course available for use year round. The Felix C. Davis Community Center is also close by which offers anything from Zumba to Youth Baseball fields. Riverfront Park is a bike ride away and offers amazing views of the Cooper River. If you want to stay closer to home, you can just walk or jog on the running path made of recycled tires that surrounds our community.
2) Park Circle Restaurants and Nightlife:
The Olde North Charleston Business district offers everything from a Craft Bakery, highly rated restaurants, bars, music venues and an art gallery. For lack of a better word, the area is just “Cool”. It’s a great place to hang out, have a drink and hangout with friends. Here is a list of the many establishments that I have personally visited and love:
Cork Bistro – I go here for special occasions. Amazing food.
Evo Pizzeria – gourmet wood-fired pizza’s, great local beers! (try the pork trifecta!)
Evo Craft Bakery – I just bought a loaf of bread and ate it with salted butter. Amazing.
Dig in the Park – Neighborhood Sports Bar. When you just want to hang outside and play cornhole with friends.
Fratello’s Italian Tavern – This just opened up and it’s Italian food!
The Barbeque Joint – One of my favorite places in Park Circle! Fried Chicken Mondays are my fave.
The Sparrow – Love when they open up their garage and live music can be heard on the street!
The Mill – Open Mic Mondays. Always a good time!
3) Park Circle Accolades:
National Magazines are recognizing the Park Circle neighborhood as a great place to live. This Old House Magazine named Park Circle as “Best Old House Neighborhoods 2012: The South”
We all know about the historic and very pricey Greek Revivals and Italianates that line the avenues of downtown Charleston. But about 20 minutes north, in the Park Circle neighborhood of North Charleston, you’ll find hundreds of lovingly crafted—albeit more modest and affordable—old houses surrounding a 30-plus-acre park filled with baseball fields, playgrounds, and a weekly farmer’s market. The origins of Park Circle go back to 1912, when it was a working-class neighborhood for employees of North Charleston’s many factories and a naval base. Closed in 1995, the base is now being transformed into breweries, waterfront parks, studio space, and offices.
The houses were built mostly from the 1920s through the 1960s and include Craftsman bungalows, Colonial Revivals, and brick ranch-style houses. Still, “one of the wonderful things about Park Circle is that, compared to downtown, it is still affordable—and there are plenty of houses left to restore.”

With its affordable houses and plenty of restaurants and shops on Montague Avenue, its main commercial thoroughfare, Park Circle is popular among first-time homebuyers. A new elementary school and a performing arts school draw families with children. “People here are all about supporting small, locally owned businesses,” says resident Thea Anderson. “We have open arms—and open buildings.”
